Varsity Head Coach
Shawn Parsell

Coach Parsell has been a volleyball coach for almost 25 years. Before beginning coaching, as a player, Coach Parsell led the Hilliard (Davidson) Wildcats to a State Final Four in 1990 & a State Championship in 1991. In 1991, he was voted team MVP, 1st Team All-Region, 1st Team All-State and Ohio Player of the Year. He also played two years of football and four years of basketball, earning all-league and honorable mention all-district as a point guard.

In 1993, Coach Parsell started off his coaching career at his alma mater, coaching boys volleyball for five seasons of JV at Hilliard (Davidson), while also coaching the JV girls at St. Francis DeSales High School.

Then, in 2000, he became the Head Coach of the Hilliard Darby Boys Volleyball Program. Once taking over this program, he led the Panthers to nine straight Conference Championships, eight District Championships, five Regional Championships and five State Tournament appearances (including four Final Fours). His program has produced a multitude of all-region and all-state players at every position, and is still regarded as one of the most respected boys volleyball programs in the state.

Coach Parsell also coached four years of girls volleyball at Darby at the freshman, JV and Varsity Assistant roles and two additional seasons of boys volleyball at Jerome High School.

After coaching at Darby, he and a high school friend, Larry Worth, created a boys’ volleyball club called Vanguard. Within a few years, the club would become nationally recognized by qualifying multiple teams at the Open level. It is currently regarded as the most successful boys club in Ohio and one of the top in the Midwest and is now ran by Coach Parsell’s alumni.

After stepping away from Vanguard, Coach Parsell became involved at the Zenith Girls Volleyball Club as the director over the regional teams and coach of a 17’s team. He would also be a varsity assistant at DeSales High School in the fall of 2016 with a team that made the Regional Semi-finals.

Wanting a new experience, Coach Parsell was accepted to coach with the USA High Performance team under OSU coach Tim Embaugh for one season. Three seasons later when Coach Embaugh had another obligation, Coach Parsell was offered to be the head coach and led his team at an international tournament hosted in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In total, Coach Parsell has coached over 35 seasons of boys and girls club and high school volleyball. He has helped several players play at the collegiate level and is just as proud as several of his former players who have went on to become coaches themselves—giving back to the sport they fell in love with.
